We even discovered some masterchefs amongst the group! Some texture modified delights created on the day included smooth puree chocolate and avocado mousse, strawberry and ricotta cups and some delicious sandwich selections!

We have had an influx of menu reviews this month which is a good sign everyone is getting on top of their menus!   Have you had yours reviewed lately? Menus should be reviewed annually or sooner if significant changes occur. The Dietitian's Association of Australia have released new National guidelines for dietitians to use for aged care menu reviewing, so a great time to have yours checked. Contact us for further information.

Ensuring proper oral hygiene and cares is paramount for residents in aged care facilities.  Bacterial growth in the mouth and orophyarnx can be a result of poor oral hygiene increasing a resident’s risk of aspiration pneumonia.  Residents should also be regularly assessed for a dry mouth (xerostomia) and strategies implemented to manage this.  Your facility Speech Pathologist is available to discuss strategies for maintaining oral hygiene and managing xerostomia.  Food Solutions also has training for staff on oral hygiene and mouth cares.

Finally, an industry update: Prime Nutrition who produce Enprocal has decided to discontinue this product- please see their communication here. If you have been using Enprocal at your facility, contact us for support to assist with any required changeovers.

A word from our Director, Samantha Murray

What a crazy start to 2017 it has been for the Food Solutions team. We launched our first dysphagia workshop in Brisbane in February and last week held our 2nd workshop in Melbourne. The feedback has been fantastic and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Kelly Rodgers for all her hard work and dedication for making this day a huge success. We are now looking forward to our next event in Sydney with other locations being scheduled for the remainder of 2017 as we speak- watch this space!

We have a lot of exciting things happening in the coming weeks including our new online learning modules. If you haven't yet registered your interest, please do so here.

As well as this, we have also commenced a new project to support foodservice staff with menu planning. We will have more information for you in our May newsletter.

I would like to wish you all a Happy Easter and make sure you enjoy some good quality chocolate easter eggs!

Best Wishes,

Dietitians Australia
